Retrofit of new goods lift in existing shaft

When Hyatt Regency Perth needed a special new goods lift, they asked Grant Elevators to design, supply and install it.

The old goods lift that travelled between the hotel’s kitchen and restaurant had become unusable. The challenge was to find a company that could fit a modern new unit into the existing shaft and pit.

Hyatt Regency initially contacted us after a recommendation from a lift consultant. The consultant knew about our problem-solving skills and ability to comply with the Building Code of Australia and Australian Standard AS1735.4, which applies to this type of lift.

The hotel considered other potential suppliers before awarding us the contract. The main factors in their decision were our reputation, engineering and design strengths, and technical expertise.

The specifications had no margin for error.

The pit depth of 80 millimetres meant that top and bottom overruns had to be minimal and forced a height restriction of only a few centimetres for the bottom of the frame. At the same time, the frame had to be strong enough to support the lift superstructure and 200 kilogram carrying capacity.

Additionally, the lift had to travel very smoothly to avoid damage to fragile items being moved between the kitchen and restaurant. Quiet operation was essential too.

The solution was to re-design and re-engineer our standard goods lift, which we did with the aid of finite element analysis software. We also installed a new micro-processing control system to give the required ride quality.

The new lift is now in operation at Hyatt Regency and performs perfectly. The quality of its design and construction, as well as our ongoing technical support, will ensure it provides many years of reliable service.
